ABOUT THE LIGHTHOUSE FOUNDATION

Practical hope.
Development. Opportunity.

The Lighthouse Foundation exists to bring practical hope, development and opportunity to people and communities. We believe lasting change begins inside a person — in the way they think, believe, choose and act.

WHY WE EXIST

Change begins within.

We believe people should never be defined only by where they come from, what they have been through, or the circumstances they find themselves in.

The Lighthouse Foundation exists to walk alongside people and communities through development, mentorship, honest conversation and practical opportunity. Our role is not to rescue people or pretend to have all the answers. It is to create spaces where people can recognise their potential, take responsibility for their choices and begin moving toward a stronger future.

When thinking changes, beliefs can change. When beliefs change, choices can change. And when choices change, lives can begin to move in a different direction.

MEET THE FOUNDERS

Two journeys. One shared purpose.

Founders, The Lighthouse Foundation

Christopher Kirkwood

Christopher Kirkwood's journey has never followed a straight line.

He grew up in a home shaped by family, discipline, faith and responsibility. His father was a deeply moral and spiritual man whose devotion to his family and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ influenced every aspect of the way he raised his sons and daughter. His mother played an equally important role, nurturing character, resilience and self-belief, while his older brother, Roger, became someone Christopher looked up to from an early age and continues to value as a source of guidance today.

These foundations did not mean that life would always be easy.

Christopher's journey through his twenties, thirties, forties and now his fifties has included successes, but also seasons of struggle, uncertainty and moments when hope felt distant.

Through those different chapters of life, one thing remained constant: his faith.

Faith became an anchor — not an escape from life's difficulties, but a foundation from which to face them. Through his own experiences, Christopher came to understand that difficult circumstances may influence a person's story, but they do not have to have the final word over their life.

Professionally, Christopher spent more than two decades in the corporate world, including telecommunications and later the financial sector. Those years strengthened his understanding of business, entrepreneurship, leadership, responsibility and the importance of creating opportunity.

But over time, another conviction became increasingly difficult to ignore.

Lasting change begins within a person — in the way we think, what we believe, the choices we make and the actions we take.

That conviction became part of the foundation upon which The Lighthouse Foundation was built.

Christopher believes that no person's past should be allowed to determine the limits of their future, and that hope becomes powerful when it is accompanied by belief, responsibility, opportunity and action.

At the heart of that calling is a simple responsibility: Be the light in someone's darkness.

Beryl Kirkwood

Beryl Kirkwood grew up with dreams that reached beyond the circumstances around her.

Like many young people, her journey was shaped by challenges, uncertainty and seasons that demanded resilience. But it was also deeply shaped by family, Christian values and a belief that life could become more than what circumstances sometimes suggested.

Those early foundations helped form the woman she would become — a woman grounded in faith, family, hope and the belief that goodness is still worth looking for, even during difficult seasons.

Beryl was just 19 years old when she met Christopher, who was 20. It was the beginning of a relationship that would see them share most of their adult lives together.

They entered that relationship as two different people, carrying different perspectives, personalities, experiences and strengths. Over the years, that diversity became something they learned not to resist, but to value.

Their journey was never about trying to change one another into the same person.

It became about learning to walk alongside each other — challenging, influencing, supporting and growing with one another while allowing each person to remain authentically themselves.

Through marriage, family, dreams, disappointments and some of life's darkest seasons, the values established early in their lives became an anchor.

Faith remained central, but alongside it grew another conviction: circumstances do not have to have the final word, and possibility remains when people choose to believe, seek what is good and keep moving forward.

Throughout that journey, Beryl has been a source of hope, love and strength.

Her faithfulness, goodness and quiet virtue have often been expressed not through position or recognition, but through presence — standing beside the people she loves, believing when circumstances made believing difficult, and remaining steady when life was anything but steady.

These qualities are part of what she brings to The Lighthouse Foundation.

For Beryl, The Lighthouse Foundation is more than an organisation. Its values reflect principles she has lived: that people should not be defined only by where they come from or what they have endured; that hope can survive difficult circumstances; that people grow when someone is willing to walk alongside them; and that meaningful change does not always begin with changing another person — sometimes it begins by believing in them.

Together with Christopher, she carries into The Lighthouse Foundation a philosophy shaped through a lifetime of experience:

Walk with people. Believe in possibility. Look for the good. Remain anchored in faith. And never underestimate what can become possible when someone begins to believe again.
OUR JOURNEY TOGETHER

Walking alongside, not trying to remake.

We did not build our life by trying to change one another. We learned to walk with one another — bringing our differences, strengths, faith and experiences into the same journey.

Those same values now shape the way we believe people should be approached through The Lighthouse Foundation: not as people who need to be fixed, but as people worth walking alongside.

We believe circumstances and the past may influence a person's story, but they do not have to determine how that story ends.

Think • Believe • Become.

A SCRIPTURE THAT GUIDES THE JOURNEY
“I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.”
Isaiah 42:6–7 · KJV

These words speak to calling, responsibility, covenant and light — principles that have shaped the founders' journey and the heart behind The Lighthouse Foundation.
